Pachmarhi is a beautiful hill station nestled in the second-largest state of central India, Madhya Pradesh. The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve is a noteworthy forest zone in the plateau of sal forest and teak forest. The biosphere reserve consists of three wildlife conservation regions - Satpura National Park, Bori Sanctuary and Pachmarhi Sanctuary. The famous Satpura National Park forms the core zone of Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve while the other two are the buffer zones.
Satpura National Park is in itself a significant region of major tourists’ interest. A completely separate plan has to be chalked out in order to enjoy the beauty and wildlife of Satpura National Park. Or, an entire day has to be encompassed in the itinerary of Pachmarhi sightseeing.
Here's a 3-day itinerary to help you explore the best of Pachmarhi:
Day 1:
Handi Khoh: Handi Khoh is a spectacular canyon and one of the most gorgeous places to visit in Madhya Pradesh. It is an almost 300 feet deep valley formed between two hills, blanketed by dense forest. Handi refers to pot and the viewpoint derived the name due to the deep gorge in the shape of a pot. Tourists can indulge in activities like horse riding, hiking and bike riding.
Pandava Caves: One of the prominent attractions in Pachmarhi, the Pandava Caves once provided shelter to the Pandava brothers during their exile. Although entry to these caves is prohibited but it is a great destination for photography from the outside. A flight of rock-cut stairs leads to the Pandava Caves.
Priyadarshini Point: Earlier known as Forsyth Point, after Captain James Forsyth, who discovered the Pachmarhi region from this point. Priyadarshini Point has gained popularity due to its breathtaking scenic beauty. The view from Priyadarshini Point includes the vision of Handi Khoh.
Day 2:
Apsara Vihar: Apsara in English implies fairy and Apsara Vihar refers to Fairy Pool. Reaching Apsara Vihar involves a gypsy ride and a downhill walking trail for about 500 metres. The beautiful waterfall is surrounded by verdant forest on all sides.
Bee Falls: Pachmarhi is home to multiple waterfalls due to its undulating topography. Bee Falls is one of the famous cascades. Also known by the name ‘Jamuna Pratap’, tourists enjoy taking a bath in the pool of the waterfall.
Dhoopgarh: Dhoopgarh is among the iconic must-visit places in Pachmarhi, the highest point in the Satpura Range, to witness a mesmerizing sunset. The bird’s eye view from the viewpoint is unquestionably jaw-dropping.
Day 3:
Jata Shankar Caves: The Jata Shankar Caves is a significant spiritual place dedicated to Lord Shiva. The stalagmites and stalactites formed inside the cave resemble Lord Shiva's matted hair, hence, the name Jata Shankar caves.
Spend the afternoon in shopping for local handicrafts and souvenirs. Pachmarhi is known for its tribal art and hand woven textiles. Otherwise, you can check out from Pachmarhi once done with the sightseeing. In order to board a flight from Pachmarhi, the nearest airport is at Bhopal and Jabalpur. For boarding a train back home, the closest railhead is Pipariya Railway Station, about 53 km from Pachmarhi. The rest of the distance has to be covered by road.
